How Students Use The NESC
Students in the Department of Nuclear Engineering use the NESC’s reactor labs in their NUEN 405, NUEN 606 & other courses. They use the reactor to answer complex questions about reactor theory. They operate the reactor under instruction and conduct self-directed design projects at the NESC. Students also have to opportunity to obtain reactor operator licenses or duty health physicist certificate.
Training
NESC offers training to Texas A&M University Nuclear Engineering students pursuing their Nuclear Reactor Operator’s License and Senior Reactor Operator’s License. Students receive hands-on experience learning about and operating the TRIGA reactor. Students have the opportunity to work at the NESC while they complete their Nuclear Reactor Operator’s License, and Healthy Physics Qualifications, as they continue receiving the experience necessary to operate a nuclear reactor.
Outreach
The Nuclear Engineering & Science Center is committed to quality education and outreach in nuclear power, nuclear medicine, and nuclear technology. Tours are available to all people with all levels of background in nuclear power and nuclear technology. Whether you’re a sixth-grade student just learning about nuclear science or a professor of nuclear engineering, we want you to visit us.

The NESC engages with Industry in various capacities. Whether these engagements are related to the commercial services offered by the NESC, providing continuing education training at our facility, or other offered services, the NESC welcomes those opportunities. The NESC has strong working relationships with the National Organization of Test, Research, and Training Reactors (TRTR), the International Group on Research Reactors (IGORR), and the American Nuclear Society (ANS).
Training
The Nuclear Engineering & Science Center is committed to providing workforce development opportunities to our industry colleagues and professionals. The NESC offers continuing education training and is developing a comprehensive Nuclear Reactor Operator’s License training class.
